Mike O’Connell is the Director of the Palm Beach County Coastmen. With 54 years of experience in barbershop music, and a career as a professor of electrical instrumentation and controls at SUNY Delhi College of Technology (and originator of the program at SUNY), Mike is a valuable asset to the chorus. He served as Coastmen Director from 2016 to 2019 and is thrilled to return as our leader. Mike, from Astoria, Queens, has sung lead and tenor, as well as being section leader, for several choruses: The Golden Chordsmen (Westchester County), The Midstatesmen (Otsego County), Catskill Chordsmen (Otsego County), Racing City Chorus (Saratoga Springs), The Sunshine Chordsmen (Sunrise, Florida, now the Miamians) and the Palm Beach Coastmen. Additionally, he sang in the following quartets: Four Knights Out (Westchester), Harmony Junction (Otsego County for 25 years), Midnight Ramblers and Nuance (Palm Beach). Mike is a charter member of SPPBQSUS, an association of barbershop singers distinctive from the older Barbershop Harmony Society, of which he is also a member.
Mike wants to take his time with the chorus; get to know the members and learn what kind of chorus they want to belong to. "Singing should be fun," says Mike, and that pretty much sums things up.
